The Colosseum is an amazing feat of Roman architecture and was used for gladiatorial battles and contests. It could once hold 50,000 spectators, but has been damaged in recent times, meaning a large section of the structure is missing. No trip to Rome is complete without visiting this historic and iconic building which gives a fantastic glimpse at more savage times. The Vatican City is the world’s smallest independent state and definitely worth a trip whenever you visit Rome. Whilst many choose traditional tours around the city, one of the most popular in recent times has been the ‘Angels and Demons’ walking tour that takes you around the areas mentioned in the famous book and in the hit Hollywood movie.
The Pantheon is an amazing work of architecture. It was built as a temple for all the gods, and is well known because of its very large dome. It is a functioning church, so do show respect, and inside it you will see signs of the former bronze ceiling which was melted down to make bombards to fortify Castel Sant’ Angelo. If you happen to be in Rome in the rainy season, make sure you visit the Pantheon to see rain falling through the open dome ceiling, as it is a unique and extraordinary site. The Roman Forum was the seat of the Roman government which was, at one time, the most powerful government in the world. Entry to the forum is free, but it is highly recommended you get an audio guide as it will elevate your experience of standing at the centre of the Roman Empire.
When in Rome, make sure you visit some of the few hundred churches in the city. The only thing to watch out for is your dress as you will not be allowed into most churches with bare midriffs, bare shoulders, or bare knees. The best thing to do is to wear pants or a long skirt, and make sure you are well covered, as you will only be told you can’t enter the church the moment you are just about to step in after standing for hours in the queue to get the pass.. This is especially true for Saint Peters church, but you may be able to find a vendor selling shirts and pants right outside.
You can also enjoy a walk in the Piazza di spagna, Campo dei fiori where you will also find the Roman fruit and vegetable market and of course do not miss out the piazza del popolo or the people’s square- the largest one of Italy. This remains the most majestic of Rome’s square and you will love enjoy the 3 churches and fountain located here. The Egyptian tall obelisk standing out adds an old world charm to the bustling square. You will also love to stroll around the numerous small stalls and cafeterias that serve tasty delights.
